UK National Pest Awards - Unsung Hero of the Year
Finalists in the National Pest Awards' Unsung Hero of the Year are:
Tim Bloomer, Killgerm
Tim Bloomer has worked in the pest control sector in a variety of roles: from technician through to operations and sales. Working for Killgerm for the last nine years, he is currently the company’s area sales manager for the South West, Wales and the Midlands.
Tim said there are two ways of doing a job. “One way is sticking to the job description, while the other way is being flexible to help customers with problem.”
“The key to my role is building trust with customers.”
Tim, who was nominated for the award, by John Tomes, a director of Amicus Environmental Services, referenced one customer that was having problems with operation management issues and Tim was able to save the business £40,000 – the cost of taking on an additional technician – by re- writing all of the customer’s scheduling.
Tim said to win this category would be ‘extremely flattering’, as well as good to be recognised for his service.
Jonathan Giles, Aderyn Pest Control
Jonathan Giles gained his Level 2 certification in pest management in May 2019 and joined South Wales-based Aderyn Pest Control in January 2020.
Jonathan was nominated for this award by Chris Corbett, the managing director of Aderyn Pest Control.
Chris said: “From the moment Jonathan joined Aderyn he has shown exceptional customer service and commitment to helping the team, often being found to have gone out in evenings and weekends to assist a client who needed help without being asked – no matter whether work is 3am or 11 pm, Jonathan will be there.”
Jonathan commented that the industry is great as no two days are ever the same.
“I plan to do the Level 3 qualification, but I still have lots to learn; being shortlisted for this award was nice, and it would be great to win,” he added.
Richard Packer, Rentokil Pest Control
Richard Packer has worked in the pest control industry for 12 years and after progressing through the ranks – from technician and field biologist – he is now senior technical field consultant and trainer for Rentokil Pest Control.
Richard trains 350 pest controllers a year and during the pandemic he’s been training up to 20 colleagues on video call for the Level 3 qualification. In pre-COVID times, he trained 12-14 pest controllers in a classroom environment.
Richard was nominated for the award by Berwyn Evans, head of SME at Rentokil Pest Control.
Berwyn said: “Richard is always on hand to provide technical support and guidance and will ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to learn.
"Richard passes on his passion and enthusiasm for pest control to his learners.”
Richard added: “To win this award would be a really nice achievement.”
